Steps of Joy

About Me

Bianca is a driven 16-year-old student at German Swiss International School with a determination to engineer lasting renewable energy technologies. Her comprehensive knowledge of the most relevant and promising developments in the field (specifically eukaryotic microalgae biodiesels, tandem solar cells, and piezoelectric transducers) is reflected and explored in her independent research on the topics, in addition to her monthly newsletter section, keeping her community up to date on this prevalent subject. In her free time, she is co-president of the GSIS Global Goals Council, where she manages a team of changemakers to advocate for the UN SDGs through a multitude of events and collaborations, notably with local NGOs, the Imperial Enterprise Lab, and her school administration. Furthermore, she is a community contributor, working closely with Plastic Free Seas and Sunshine Action to serve her environment and those in need of support, while also working for the Borussia Dortmund football academy's Hong Kong branch as a coach. She hopes to explore a newfound interest in computer vision neural networks and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence's growing use, understanding more about the water expenditure that comes at a cost to this new tool.

Project Description

She co-founded 'Steps of Joy' with two of her good friends, having provided over 100 pairs of shoes to underprivileged children in the Philippines to promote podiatric health in youth sports, hoping to share her passion for activity without the cost of safety. She has so far raised over 5,000 HKD to support the cause, partnering with local charities including Ava Club on Siargao Island, and, recently, BHOLI Youth Centre in northern Mindanao. Bianca has a goal of reducing the enormous waste from shoes disposed of in Hong Kong, utilising familiar infrastructure in Balikbayan Boxes to empower young sportspeople with the resources they duly need. As a manager of operations and outreach, she looks to further expand her reach to more communities in the Philippines, gaining support from other students in her city, in addition to corporate partnerships with brands such as TOMS shoes. One of her biggest inspirations for the project was a girl named Rhea Bullos, a girl in Iloilo City who won regional races with shoes made of tape.
