A. A Taste of the UN SDGs

Sustainable Development Goals

In 2020, to celebrate the UN's 75th anniversary, ITS piloted an exciting new programme not seen in Hong Kong before. The programme, ITS Young Changemakers Incubator, supports participants in identifying, planning and implementing a social change project under the auspices of the United Nations using the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. These projects fulfil the double role of making an impact in the world and boosting the credentials of young people as they look towards their personal futures of study and work.

The pilot projects were fantastic and created real impact in the fields of mental resilience, education support for the under-privileged, sub-standard housing and knowledge acquisition. In 2021, we fully launched the programme with members addressing food waste, dementia, loneliness, ASD, mask sanitizing, carbon sequestration among others.

Based off of an informal CV and a small questionnaire, potential participants are given specific advice on which SDGs they may have an immediate passion for, and initial suggestions on how they can act. Those who need to fulfill extracurricular requirements for school can now turn these requirements into passion projects of which they have full ownership and are officially recognized by the UN.

B. Take UN certificate courses

ITS, along with The MXA Group and Family Mask, is proud to join hands to support the #KIDsforSDGs initiative. As you may know, the United Nations, in partnerships with various organisations and affiliates, offer students a chance to learn from the United Nations University and other accredited academic institutions about the SDGs. For UN75, we are honored to welcome WFUNA to offer an exclusive SDG program in Hong Kong for the very first time.

In the future, we aim to bring other courses taught by a global faculty from the United Nations, the World Bank, universities such as New York University, Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the Stockholm Resilience Centre, and other academic, government, and non-profit institutions.

For some courses, students may even meet, debate and learn from both the world's leading sustainable development experts and your fellow students.

Upon completing the relevant coursework, which are mostly virtual, and passing a final exam, the student will be able to receive an official certificate issued by the relevant organisation, including UN entities. These globally accredited certificates would be of tremendous value to build upon a student’s personal statement.

ITS, as an advocate for the SDGs, are happy to advice and facilitate the enrolment of students, and where necessary, provide advisory services to assist the student successfully complete these courses.

C. Explore Experience-Based Learning

As educators…we can help students grow into…a global civic identity and understand how their decisions have an impact ranging well beyond their immediate vicinity. We believe the United Nations is uniquely placed to support institutions such as ITS in instilling a sense of global citizenship in today’s youth.

Education, or the transmission, acquisition, creation and adaptation of information, knowledge, skills and values, is a key lever of sustainable development. This is based on a vision of inclusive societies in which all citizens have equitable opportunities to access effective and relevant learning throughout life delivered through multiple formal, non-formal and informal settings.

As such, education is essential to individuals’ development as it is to the development of their families, of the local and national communities to which they belong, and to the world at large. As a fundamental human right enshrined in a number of international normative frameworks, and built into most national legislation, the right to education is to be seen as an enabling right for the realization of other economic, social and cultural rights, as well as a catalyst for positive societal change, social justice and peace.

Experience-based education is that we believe would assist students in growing into their adult self. This could take the form of:


Apprenticeships provide students an opportunity to try out a job, usually with an experienced professional in the field to act as a mentor.

Clinical experiences

Clinical experiences provide hands-on experiences of a predetermined duration directly tied to an area of study, such as nursing students participating in a hospital-based experience or child development and teacher education students participating in day care and classroom settings.


Provide tuition or aid to support the training of students for a period of time. They are usually made by educational institutions, corporations, or foundations to assist individuals pursuing a course of study or research.

Field work

Field work allows students to explore and apply content learned in the classroom in a specified field experience away from the classroom. Field work experiences bridge educational experiences with an outside community that can range from neighborhoods and schools to anthropological dig sites and laboratory settings.


Internships provide students with an opportunity to test the waters in a career field and also gain some valuable work experience. Internships can be for credit, not for credit, paid, or unpaid.


Practicums often a required component of a course of study and place students in a supervised and often paid situation. Students develop competencies and apply previously studied theory and content, such as school library media students working in a high school library or marketing majors working in a marketing research firm.


Service learning is distinguished by being mutually beneficial for both student and community. Service-learning is growing rapidly and is considered a part of experiential education by its very nature of learning, performing a job within the community, and serious reflection by the student. Service-learning involves tackling some of society’s complex issues such as homelessness, poverty, lack of quality education, pollution, etc.

Simulations and gaming/role-playing

When used as part of a course, simulations and gaming/role-playing aim to imitate a system, entity, phenomenon, or process. They attempt to represent or predict aspects of the behavior of the problem or issue being studied. Simulation can allow experiments to be conducted within a fictitious situation to show the real behaviors and outcomes of possible conditions.

Student teaching

Student teaching provides candidates with an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have been developing in the preparation program. Student teaching typically involves an on-site experience in a partner school and opportunities for formal and informal candidate reflection on their teaching experience.

Study abroad

Study abroad offer students a unique opportunity to learn in another culture, within the security of a host family and a host institution carefully chosen to allow the transfer of credit to a student’s degree program.

Undergraduate research

Undergraduate research is increasingly common at universities across all disciplines. With strong support from the National Science Foundation and the research community, scientists are reshaping their courses to connect key concepts and questions with students’ early and active involvement in systematic investigation and research. The goal is to involve students with actively contested questions, empirical observation, cutting-edge technologies, and the sense of excitement that comes from working to answer important questions.


Volunteering allows students to serve in a community primarily because they choose to do so. Many serve through a nonprofit organization—sometimes referred to as formal volunteering—but a significant number also serve less formally, either individually or as part of a group.

To this end, ITS provides a global team of advisors with international experience who can guide students to navigate their personal journey, on a bespoke basis and anchored by their personal SDGs, and take on the aforementioned list of opportunities for experience-based learning. Through our global network, we would support the application, management and completion of these programs at organisations such as the United Nations and its 15 specialized agencies, including
